All about Maxi Cosi
If you’re researching prams or strollers you might be wondering if Maxi Cosi prams exist, and what stroller is compatible with Maxi Cosi car seats? These two questions are ones we get asked many times a day, so here we are to clarify it all for you! Maxi Cosi is a popular brand of baby capsules and car seats, with their range being widely available across Australia and stocked by all major baby product retailers. You can view their product range and find your nearest stockist here. Not sure what all the different terms mean? Let’s go back a step and explain what’s what!
Baby capsule vs car seat
When googling what stroller is compatible with Maxi Cosi car seat, you’ve probably come across two different types of products: Baby/car capsules and car seats. Both products provide a safe and comfortable way to transport and protect your baby when travelling in a car. What is the difference? Baby capsules, sometimes also referred to as infant carriers, are designed with a convenient carry handle that allows you to move your baby from the car by carrying them with you while still strapped into their seat.
Capsules are a rearward facing car restraint only, and attach to the car by clicking into a pre-installed base which stays in your car at all times, as well as a top tether strap which needs to be connected to an anchor point in your car. The tether strap is disconnected each time you take the capsule out, and re-connected once you put the capsule back into your car. Capsules can also connect to a compatible pram or stroller using adaptors, which can save time and effort when going about your daily routine. Standard baby capsules are generally only used for up to 6 months, however this varies greatly depending on your babies length. All car seat usage is determined by height (not weight) and there will be shoulder height markers on all capsules and carseats which tell you when your baby has outgrown the restraint, and needs to be moved into a new one. If you have tall genes running in your blood, a capsule may not make it to the 6 month mark.
Car seats are designed to be used in the car only, so they do not attach to a pram and can’t be carried around. Car seats can often accommodate your baby from newborn up to 4 years, with more and more convertible car seats now able to accommodate children from newborn right up to 8 years old.
We recommend doing further research and consulting your local baby retailer for the full run-down and to help you decide what's best for your family.
Please keep in mind that both car capsules and car seats are not designed to be used for long periods of time or for overnight sleeping. Product Safety Australia have also published a very informative guide all about children's car restraints to give you all the necessary background information.
Things to consider before purchasing a capsule
Imagine finally getting your little one to sleep in the car, only to have to wake them by picking them up and carrying them inside once you get home! Many parents choose to make these dreaded moments a little easier by using a capsule for the first six months or so.
You might also want to look at the cost of various capsules, taking into account that you’ll need to buy a convertible car seat once your baby has reached the shoulder height markers on the capsule (often 6 months or sooner). It may be an option to hire a baby capsule instead of purchasing one but please check the below points to ensure it will suit you and your pram.
